The history of Odisha dates back to ancient times, when the region was known as Kalinga. It was the land of the historic Kalinga War (261 BCE), an event that deeply transformed Emperor Ashoka and played a significant role in the spread of Buddhism. Over the centuries, Odisha was ruled by several powerful dynasties, including the Mahameghavahana, Bhaumakara, Somavamsi and Eastern Ganga dynasties, each contributing to its magnificent architectural and cultural legacy. The Eastern Ganga rulers built the iconic Jagannath Temple at Puri and the magnificent Sun Temple at Konark, while Odisha’s rich maritime history connected it with Southeast Asia through ancient sea trade.

Odisha is also celebrated as the birthplace of Odissi, one of India’s classical dance forms, and for its vibrant festivals such as Rath Yatra, Durga Puja and Bali Jatra. Its tribal communities, traditional handicrafts, Pattachitra paintings, silver filigree and handloom traditions add further colour to its cultural identity.
